The Award (approximately $500 per category, but amount may vary) will be applied toward payment of tuition and fees. The recipient may follow any curriculum. The oldest continuing writers' organization in the United States, Alabama Writers Conclave, was organized in 1923 at Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo). Its co-founders, Dr. Thomas Palmer, then president of Alabama College, and Katherine Chapman, well-known writer from Selma, were assisted by Mary Staten Gilmore, Birmingham civic leader and chair of the Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs. The Conclave's several hundred writers of fiction and nonfiction, poetry, and plays, editors and publishers, and teachers of writing come mostly from Alabama, but also from other states. Together they provide a forum for sharing information, developing ideas, honing skills and giving practical advice and encouragement to beginning writers as well as to proficient and widely-established authors. The Conclave also receives nomination for Alabama's poet laureate who is appointed by the Governor of Alabama every four years. Scholarship Competition Eligibility Juniors and seniors expecting to graduate from any Alabama high school and transferees from any Alabama junior college who plan to enroll in the University of Montevallo may compete for the Alabama Writers' Conclave scholarship by entering the annual writing contest.
